If you live in the San Francisco Bay Area, you may have noticed the sudden flux of wind and rain in the last couple weeks. If you live north of San Francisco, near Napa or Sonoma, there may have been flood warnings around your neighborhood!

While the rain may be good for your lawn, your next car ride may be a little more perilous than usual. About 46 percent of weather-related accidents occur when it is raining. The best approach to rain is to either avoid it by staying home (for all you lucky enough to be able to work-at-home) and by preparing for the hazards before driving.

Here are some steps you can take to prepare for rainy weather driving, thanks to Edmunds.

  1. The Quarter Test

Insert a quarter into your tire tread. If the top of Washington’s head is exposed at any point, you should replace your tires. Tire tread is very important for driving in hazardous conditions.

  1. Check Your Speed

You should always drive a little slower in the rain, because the wetness of road reduces the friction.

  1. 6 Seconds

Normally, you want to put a 3 – 5 second window between yourself and the car in front of you. During rainy weather, you want to increase that window to at least 6 seconds.

  1. Hydroplane Safety

Hydroplaning occurs when tires ride on top of a layer of water and have lost contact with the pavement.

  1. Hit the Books

Reading up on driving techniques or attending an advanced driving class can help you prepare for emergency situations on the road.

There are about a dozen ways to prepare for weather conditions on the road, but there are a dozen more ways a rainy road can surprise you. The best suggestion we can give and probably the best decision anyone can make driving under adverse weather conditions is to slow down.

Your personal auto insurance (or your commercial auto insurance, if you are driving your company’s vehicle) will thank you for taking extra caution when the weather is bad. Golden Benchmark Insurance Services to a client here in the San Francisco Bay Area: we have long known that driving safety awareness is the key to keeping the cost of car insurance down.

Developing a safety program for a fleet of drivers, a fully-staffed office, or a working warehouse requires an expertise touch. Call (1-510-818-9877) or email (admin@goldenbenchmark.com) to schedule an appointment with Golden Benchmark's safety masterminds.
